Nimai Rigby spent 2016 touring BC\u00a0on his own personal ale trail.<\/h2>\n

Rigby, who lives in Coquitlam in BC’s Lower Mainland,\u00a0set himself the goal of visiting 100 of the province’s breweries within the year, and\u00a0completed his quest just 11 days before 2017 arrived.<\/p>\n

But why take the journey, and where did it lead? <\/span><\/p>\n

Just before the completion of his beer odyssey, I met him\u00a0at Granville Island Brewing in Vancouver to share a beer and find out.<\/span><\/p>\n

What made you decide to take this on?<\/b><\/h3>\n

\u201cI was at Bridge Brewing<\/a> and I saw their wooden map of Canada on the wall,\u201d Rigby\u00a0said. \u201cHave you seen it? \u00a0The one filled with bottle caps?\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n

It’s a map made of wood with holes cut into it that have been filled with Bridge bottle caps. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI could make my own and stick it in my man cave,\u201d Rigby recalled thinking.\u00a0<\/span>He created a map of BC instead. Then he and a friend were sharing some beers when they got talking about how he could fill the empty spots in his map. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cInitially I\u00a0figured\u00a0I could just\u00a0pick up a beer from 100 different BC breweries to fill up the map. \u00a0Even that seemed ambitious at the time.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Rigby’s friend pushed him further. \u201cHe said: \u2018Why don\u2019t you actually visit these places? Make a trip out of it?\u2019 I like a challenge, so I said, \u2018Sure, why not?\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

After all, the fact he lives in the Lower Mainland\u00a0meant that he had ready access to a sizeable proportion of the destinations.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThen my friend one-upped me even further: \u2018Why don\u2019t you do them all in a year?\u2019 he said.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Rigby\u00a0agreed. \u201cI\u2019ve lived in BC all my life,\u201d he told me. \u00a0\u201cThere\u2019s so many places that I\u2019ve never been to. I\u2019ve never been to the Kootenays before, never been to Penticton and Oliver.”<\/p>\n

“I thought this would be a great way to see a bit more of BC.”<\/strong><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The opportunity to explore is something that kept Rigby focused on his journey. His BC brew tour had him driving, camping and discovering the province in a way he\u2019d never done before.<\/span><\/p>\n

Of all the things you saw on your journey, what stood out for you the most?<\/b><\/h3>\n

\u201cThere are so many breweries that stand out, whether it\u2019s quality of the beer or their tasting room,\u201d Rigby said. \u201cEach brewery has its own story and for me that\u2019s what is most exciting to discover.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

He uses Firehall Brewing<\/a> in Oliver as an example.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe brewer started as a home brewer in college and somehow picked up some old brewing equipment from a local bootlegger through an RCMP auction. His dad managed to get the old volunteer fire department building. All these weird, random things just… came together.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Each brewery tells its own story. <\/strong><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\u201cVisiting Victoria and some of the breweries on the Island were like that too,\u201d he added. \u201cGoing to Swans<\/a> and learning the history of that place is really neat. And places like Hoyne<\/a> that are small and cozy, really humble, but have this passion for their beer that you can feel when you go in there.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s this experience that defines any stop on the BC Ale Trail: an opportunity to taste and feel what inspires each brewer, and each brewery, to create the best beer it\u00a0can for its\u00a0community.\u00a0<\/span>The stories that grow and evolve around beer and breweries are what attract people and make them feel like a part of the narrative. It also helps us all feel connected to the beer we\u2019re drinking.<\/p>\n

What recommendations do you have for anyone who might\u00a0follow your example?<\/b><\/h3>\n

\u201cPeople shouldn\u2019t be intimidated by beer,\u201d suggested Rigby. \u201cEveryone starts somewhere. I used to love the usual suspects when I was younger \u2014 Canadian, Kokanee, Coors Light \u2014 but then, when my friend got a job at Steamworks<\/a>, he introduced me to craft beer. It was the flavours that got me hooked.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rigby\u00a0is quick to point out that everyone will have a different “gateway beer.” He\u2019s not a huge sour beer fan himself but the fact that sours have become an entry point into craft beer for some people is exciting.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIf you\u2019re going to visit a few breweries, bring someone along who either has never visited a brewery before, or who isn\u2019t into craft beer.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

There are two reasons for this, Rigby\u00a0explained. First, they will want to do other things than just drink beer all day, so your trip will be more varied and they\u2019ll help you see other things on your journey.\u00a0<\/span>Second, \u201cIt\u2019s a way to bring someone new into craft beer and that\u2019s really powerful. Once you\u2019ve got them trying different beer options they\u2019ll always find something they like and then you can encourage them to compare different versions of the same style from different breweries.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s a great way to teach someone about craft beer without making them feel like they\u2019re in a classroom. Most of us learn best by doing, after all.<\/span><\/p>\n

Where will you go from here?<\/b><\/h3>\n

Although he cut it close, Rigby\u00a0made it to 100 before the year was out. On Sunday, December 18, he filled the last empty spot on his map at Persephone Brewing<\/a> in Gibsons.<\/p>\n

“Mostly, I’m feeling good that I’ve completed what I set out to do,” Rigby\u00a0says. “Now I can get back to drinking craft beer, but I can say I’ve seen so much more of BC!”<\/p>\n

But there are still plenty of breweries that Rigby\u00a0has yet to visit. <\/span><\/p>\n

“I regret not visiting some of the\u00a0breweries in central and northern BC like Barkerville<\/a> in Quesnel and Wheelhouse<\/a> in Prince Rupert. Hopefully I’ll be able to go up there some time next year for a visit.”<\/span><\/p>\n

And with so many breweries opening up around BC, there are sure to be plenty more destinations for Rigby\u00a0to visit when he sets out on his next personalized ale trail journey.<\/p>\n
