Enjoy the blossoms and one of Vancouver&#8217;s most beloved events from wherever you are.<\/p>\n<p>I love when April rolls around because it means it&#8217;s time for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vcbf.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Vancouver Cherry Blossom Festival<\/a> (VCBF). It makes my heart happy that the cherry blossoms are so beloved in Vancouver that we have an annual festival dedicated to <em>sakura<\/em> trees. But necessary physical distancing means the festival pivoted to an online format for a second year. <strong>Because we need to stay local and stay safe.<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Did you know?<\/strong> Many of Vancouver\u2019s <strong>40,000+<\/strong> cherry trees originated as gifts from Japan. The cherry blossom festival was created as a way to express gratitude and celebrate the beauty and joy they bring to Vancouverites.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>To give everyone their cherry blossom fix, the VCBF has revamped their events so Vancouverites and others can experience <em>hanami<\/em> (the Japanese word for cherry blossom viewing) in digital form or \u2014 for locals \u2014 at a distance. Hosted by local media personalities, the ticket price for this online event features incredible menu selections to be delivered right to Vancouverite doors. With supporting local in mind, I connected with our own Joe Wiebe for some beer pairing suggestions to enjoy your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vcbf.ca\/community-event\/sakura-at-home\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">gala meal selection<\/a>. Here are his recommendations:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Consider pairing <a href=\"https:\/\/bcaletrail.ca\/breweries\/strange-fellows-brewing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Strange Fellows Brewing<\/a>&#8216;s Reynard Oud Bruin with the offering from Salmon n\u2019 Bannock. (Appetizer: Candied Salmon \/ Entree: Duck Confit with Cherry Glaze \/ Dessert: Cherry Walnut Cake)<\/li>\n<li>With the nutty\/salty notes of the Wild Origins &#8220;cook-along&#8221; option in mind, Joe suggests a tart and salty gose like the <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/bcaletrail.ca\/breweries\/33-acres-brewing-co\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">33 Acres Brewing Experiment<\/a> Mezcal Gose or the &#8220;Cuban Taxi Guava Gose from <a href=\"https:\/\/bcaletrail.ca\/breweries\/callister-brewing-co\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Callister Brewing<\/a>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Complement the richness of the menu from Burdock &amp; Co. with a porter or stout. The Dive Bomb Porter from <a href=\"https:\/\/bcaletrail.ca\/breweries\/powell-street-craft-brewery\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Powell Brewery<\/a> or Cherry Cola Stout from <a href=\"https:\/\/bcaletrail.ca\/breweries\/electric-bicycle-brewing\/\">Electric Bicycle Brewing<\/a> would go well. An alternative to this would be the <a href=\"https:\/\/bcaletrail.ca\/breweries\/faculty-brewing-co\/\">Faculty Brewing<\/a> anniversary Benifuki Dubbel. (Appetizer: Cherry Leaf Cured Scallop and Shiso Rice Crisp \/ Entree: Burdock and Sakura Sausage with Shallot and Beet Salad \/ Dessert: Sakura Milk Custard with Meringue-Sour Cherries and Salted href=\"https:\/\/bcaletrail.ca\/breweries\/andina-brewing-company\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Andina Brewing<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/bcaletrail.ca\/breweries\/superflux-beer-co\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Superflux Beer Co.<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/bcaletrail.ca\/breweries\/main-street-brewery\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Main Street Brewing<\/a> have excellent options to choose from. (Appetizer: Papri Chaat \/ Entree: Vij\u2019s family creamy chicken curry OR coconut curried vegetables; both with cherry blossom Basmati rice \/ Dessert: Coconut pudding with fruits and rose water<\/li>\n<li>Joe recommends a Czech-style Pilsner \u2014 like the Stimulus Czech from Callister or Czechmate from <a href=\"https:\/\/bcaletrail.ca\/breweries\/off-the-rail-brewing-co\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Off the Rail Brewing<\/a> \u2014 with the Miku menu. (Shusai + Aburi + Dessert)<\/li>\n<li>To pair with the menu from Chefs Will Lew and Clement Chan, a breezy Saison will do quite nicely. <a href=\"https:\/\/bcaletrail.ca\/breweries\/brassneck-brewery\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Brassneck Brewery<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/bcaletrail.ca\/breweries\/east-van-brewing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">East Van Brewing<\/a> each have a good option. more than 3,000 people from all over would come together in Vancouver for The Big Picnic to share in the beauty of the blossoms. While we can&#8217;t do that this year, you can have your own sakura picnic.
