Just Here for the Beer is Canada’s original dedicated beer radio program. The show has been running since 2010 and airs on the second and last Saturday of each month on Sportsnet AM 650. In April, they visited Abbotsford to explore some of the local breweries, cideries and wineries that call the city home.

Breweries can be a strong focal point for any community. Many of them align their name with the characteristics or features of their surroundings. Ace Brewing opened its doors in 2019, and is proud of its vintage aviation theme, reflecting the history of the Comox Valley and Canadian Air Force.  Aaron sat down with the head brewer, Dan Lake.

Three things Aaron learned:

1. Dan was first a geologist before getting into brewing.
2. Ace Brewing is themed after the community’s ties to the local air force base.
3. The brewery is located in an old car dealership, which gives it a very unique look and feel.

As soon as travel restrictions opened up, Aaron hit the road and took a ferry to Vancouver Island!

“It’s always a great feeling escaping the city and visiting communities around the province!” – Aaron Johnson.

Aaron visited Alberni Brewing Company, a new brewery that recently opened up in Port Alberni, where he sat down with co-owner Heather Welsh.

Founded by Heather and Jason Welsh in partnership with Yvan St. Onge, a local chef, Alberni Brewing features spacious seating, a fireplace, an outdoor patio, and a full kitchen serving a wide range of delicious dishes alongside tasty beers. Head Brewer Jason Welsh brings years of homebrewing experience and passion to the beer lineup, which includes core standards alongside rotating seasonals.

A few things Aaron learned:

1. Alberni Brewing opened just four days before full COVID restrictions were initiated in the province.
2. The brewery also features a full kitchen with an excellent menu.
3. Heather is originally from Wales, but met her husband who is originally from Port Alberni, while overseas.

There is a spot in the Lower Mainland that has seen a major shift to an entertainment district in recent years, and that place is located in North Vancouver, located on the traditional unceded territories of the Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh.

House of Funk Brewing opened its doors a little over two years ago after seeing a gap in the British Columbia market. They have seen major growth and have even developed a sister brand, House of Lager.

Aaron sat down with owner Darren Hollett.

Things Aaron learned:

1. Darren saw that funky beers weren’t a main focus of a brewery in Vancouver.
2. They’ve started a sub-brand called “House of Lager.”
3. House of Funk also has a coffee program.

“I met up with a craft beer industry friend in a Vancouver park for a chat. Xander Szymanski is the Head Brewer of Monkey 9 Brewing in Richmond. We talked about how Xander got into brewing craft beer, some previous places where he has worked, and a brewery project of his own he started.”

Monkey 9 Brewing, located on the traditional unceded territories of the Tsawwassen and Musqueum, opened in 2017. Born in the year of the Monkey, this brewery has a massive restaurant and bar area to enjoy their beers, and it is also connected to a bowling alley.

This facility has been around for a while, first known as Big River Brewing and then later as Be Right Back Brewing.

Three things Aaron learned about Monkey 9:

• Monkey 9 was founded in the year of Monkey
• Monkey 9 is one of the few breweries located in Richmond
• Xander won Bronze at the Canadian Brewing Awards for his Baltic Porter

In this episode, Aaron finds himself in North Vancouver, located on the traditional unceded territories of the Tsleil-Waututh, Squamish and Musqueum.

This area has seen a major boom of breweries opening in recent years, but there is one brewery that is a bit of an outlier on the map compared to the cluster of others down on the waterfront. Wildeye Brewing is a quiet gem on the North Shore, with a large tasting room and patio in the shadow of the surrounding mountains and trails.

Conceived by a local North Vancouverite who loves living, working and playing on the North Shore, Wildeye is located near Lynn Creek. Its location just minutes from the Ironworkers Memorial Bridge, which carries traffic on the Trans-Canada Highway heading towards Whistler, makes it an ideal spot to plan your next adventure on Vancouver’s North Shore Ale Trail.

The brewery has a big, welcoming tasting room open seven days a week with lots of tables for socializing and catching up with friends. It’s a family friendly space with a bistro kitchen serving west coast inspired food. Look for live music on Thursday nights if you need yet another excuse to drop by.

Beer-wise, Wildeye offers a solid set of core beers augmented by rotating seasonal offerings — in other words: something for everyone from a novice beer discoverer to a road-weary beer geek looking for the newest and trendiest styles.

Aaron sat down with the founder, Samantha Lindeman. He learned that she first “discovered” craft beer while working in South Australia. She originally comes from the wine industry but returned to Canada with an idea to open a brewery.

Back in 2016 a new brewery opened up in Vancouver with something a bit different to offer.

Located in the neighbourhood of East Vancouver, also known in the craft beer community as “Yeast Van” is Luppolo Brewing. Vancouver’s East Side has a long historical connection with Italian culture: restaurants and cafés, delis, gelaterias, pizzerias, and — thanks to this brewery — craft beer!

Luppolo (pronounced loop-o-lo) is Italian for “hops,” one of the core ingredients in beer. The brewery chose this name to reflect the Italian heritage of two of its owners and to embrace the concepts of craftsmanship, community and family, values they feel are closely associated with Italian culture. The brewery’s branding is both elegant and playful, and the tasting room’s decor is attractive and welcoming.

The brewery’s own kitchen offers a variety of Italian aperitivo (appetizers), including a selection of Italian cured meats and cheeses, antipasti, salads and focaccia. Luppolo has also partnered with Mordimi, an authentic Italian pizzeria that now operates at the brewery, so you can get fantastic pizza there, too.

A patio was added during the pandemic, allowing for patrons to be served outside. Luppolo is also a partner in BeerVan, a collective of small family-owned Vancouver craft breweries and beverage producers working together to deliver their products locally. You can also do take out – walk in, call in, or order online (pizza and beer).
