And Lillooet Brewing Company is making it even easier to create your own custom gift pack by offering gift-wrapping for your purchases at the tasting room.

Vancouver Island Brewing is making shopping easier too, with curated merch bundles available at the brewery, or online. If you aren’t in Victoria, no worries! They offer shipping as well. This year, A-FRAME Brewing is hosting its sixth-annual gingerbread cabin-building event from December 1 to 21. The kits, made locally at Sunflower Bakery in Squamish, are only $25 and of course pair well with the beers on tap – and the other bevy options, including non-alcoholic ones.

There are a couple of breweries around the province with built-in entertainment, like BNA Brewing Co in Kelowna with their six-lane bowling alley, plus vintage arcade games and pinball. Chances are any brewery you visit will have its own rendition of one, so check out your local brewery, or make your own. Don’t know where to get the box to DIY? Check out Craftmasbox!

DIY: Craftmas Box

For those of us with definitive tastes and choosey palates, or if you want to choose specific beers but can never quite get the look right, there are Craftmas boxes to the rescue. There are three patterns to choose from and include spaces and inserts. The box will take short and tall cans as well as small bottles. You can even roll up a t-shirt, add some fun swag and you have created your own one-of-a-kind calendar. This is Year One for the Richmond-based small business, so here’s another great way to support a local and budding entrepreneur.

Vessel Liquor in Victoria has created its own Advent Calendar Craft Beer Box, which sells for $129.99 and features 24 different craft beers curated by Vessel staff.

This is the fifth year that A-FRAME Brewing is hosting their gingerbread cabin building. The event started December 1 and runs through December 21. The kits, made locally at Sunflower Bakery in Squamish, are only $25. You can enjoy a pint and build a gingerbread cabin to bring home.

The very popular “Dine in the Cellar” event is back for the winter on Saturdays at Old Yale Brewing. You can book a table for up to 6 people, set right in the brewery. Spaces are filling up fast, so best get booking your table here.

Wanting to give something you created yourself? Why not book yourself, a friend, or both, a space at this wreath workshop held at Barnside Brewing? BEER & COOKIES? YES PLEASE! Eat holiday cookies from four Victoria bakeries paired with four craft beers from Island breweries. I love a staycation, and it’s the perfect idea for a couple. Victoria residents have the bed and breakfast at Spinnakers Brewpub in their “backyard”, while Squamish and the Sea to Sky Corridor have the hotel at Howe Sound Brewing to get cosy in. My partner and I had a staycation at Spinnakers when we lived in Victoria and it was wonderful — be sure to book the Cozy Up for Winter package. Do you know someone who has gone the extra mile this year or that you just want to make smile? Many breweries give patrons the opportunity to purchase a pint or a flight (or two!) for a friend, essential worker, or just the person behind them. Their name will go on a board and it’s a nice way to say “Happy Holidays!”

Organize a get-together

Wait, what? Yep, I said a get-together. British Columbia, you’ve done such a great job this year with vaccinations and staying safe that capacity restrictions were lifted. We still have to wear masks when not seated indoors, but you know what? We’ll take it because you can go for a pint and flight or to a craft beer event with a group of friends this holiday season. And that, my fellow craft beer lovers, is what we all truly want for Christmas, Hanukkah, Festivus, etc: social connection.

After almost a year and a half of housebound monotony, the days seem to run together, punctuated only by excruciating trips to Costco and the occasional take-out dinner.

Thankfully, that appears to be coming to an end. With the B.C. government easing social distancing guidelines this week in the face of falling Covid numbers, we are able to safely venture out into that big scary world and talk to our fellow humans for the first time in months, and even enjoy a beer in a pub or brewery without inadvertently killing grandma.

Since this Sunday is Father’s Day (surprise!), it makes for the perfect opportunity to reconnect with family and celebrate dear ol’ dad.

But where to go and what to do? And what to get the male genetic material donor in your life?

Firstly, as a working father myself, let me assure you that the dad in your life does not need, nor want, another tie, unusable handmade mug, or “World’s Most Whatever Dad” t-shirt that they will never wear outside the house—and even then, only if they have no clean laundry.

What dad wants/needs is beer.

Dadding is a tough gig at times. Both my kids are under five, which means they’re the exact height to repeatedly make direct, violent contact with my groin while running around the house at high speed. I spend at least a quarter of my day doubled over in pain. You might think an ice pack and a jockstrap would be ideal gifts this Father’s Day, but I’d really prefer to drink the pain away, instead.

 Beer, food, family, sunshine—what more do you need for Father’s Day? (Or life in general, really.) Cannery Brewing’s Backyard beer patio in Penticton is the setting for this multi-course dinner by Joy Road Catering, with each dish paired with a different Cannery beer, including an Imperial Lime Gose brewed especially for the event. Seven Ways to Support Your Local Breweries

1. visit a brewery patio

Good news! Breweries are allowed to continue serving beer on their outdoor patios or picnic areas. Last year, the government allowed BC’s craft breweries to add or expand their outdoor serving areas. As a result, most breweries do have an outdoor option so as long as the weather is good enough for you to sit outside, you should still be able to enjoy that unique in-person experience. Most may have added heaters, tents, or covered areas, but remember to bring along a blanket and dress warmly if the weather isn’t optimal. Some breweries like Camp Beer Co, Ursa Minor Brewing, Townsite Brewing, Faculty Brewing, Smugglers Trail Caskworks, and Riot Brewing to name a handful, allow your fur-kid to tag along as well!

2. ORDER beer delivery

Stuck at home? Get your craft beer fix delivered to your door! Since the pandemic arrived, many craft breweries have added online stores and direct delivery options to their websites. Some even ship province-wide using Canada Post — so if you’ve been dying to try the latest beer from Wheelhouse Brewing in Prince Rupert, Twin City Brewing in Port Alberni or Superflux in Vancouver, you’re in luck. Who doesn’t love beer mail? 

3. Purchase off-sales &/or TAKE-OUT

Support your local brewery by dropping in or driving through! Many BC Ale Trail breweries have converted their tasting rooms into an off-sales service and some who serve food are now doing take-out. Perhaps check in advance to see if you can pre-order and bring a debit or credit card for contactless payment. Patrons may need to wait their turn outside and will need to respect physical distancing guidelines of staying two metres apart.

4. Buy packaged beer with your restaurant take-out/delivery

Here’s a way to support a local restaurant and a local brewery at the same time! Restaurants are now allowed to sell packaged beer and/or growlers along with take-out or delivery orders. Some eateries have put together great packages pairing their dishes with local breweries, such as the amazing $35 Parrot Pack from the Barking Parrot in Penticton, which includes a six-pack of beer from Cannery Brewing along with not one but two cheeseburgers! Wow, I wish I lived in Penticton right now…

5. Buy gift cards that you can use later

A wonderful way to help your local brewery at this time is to buy gift cards that you can “enjoy” later — or consider gifting them or donating them to a charity so they can fundraise. By doing so, you help breweries stay open and might also help pay their staff. Note: some breweries like Container Brewing and House of Funk offer electronic gift cards so no need to go in and pick anything up!

6. support on social media

We’re always on our phones anyway, so let’s put our tapping fingers to good use! Let your brewery know how much you love them with a follow, likes, encouraging comments, and sharing your experience and/or their posts on your social channels. If you’re the designated driver for a brewery tasting room visit, you might have this role for one of a few reasons:

• You drew the short straw
• You’re pregnant
• It’s your turn
• Maybe you’re doing a ‘dry’ month

Whatever the reason, being DD can seem “no fun” as you don’t get to sip and savour what everyone else is. Because… no drinking and driving, folks — BIG no-no. But it doesn’t mean you’re stuck with just still or sparkling water. Not on the BC Ale Trail. Here are some refreshing non-alcoholic beverages available at BC craft breweries:

Kombucha

First, let’s cover off what kombucha is. This fizzy delight is a carbonated tea that has been fermented and brewed using tea, bacteria and yeast. Kombucha has healthy probiotics and antioxidant properties, and can help with immune system function, and brain and digestion health. It also provides a natural energy boost. Essentially, it’s good to sip on after a big meal, or perhaps after a tasting room visit where you weren’t the DD. At a family-friendly tasting room, your kids might even like it!

And for those who take pictures of their beverages — like me — it often comes in pretty colours and looks nice in a photo.

Here’s are some breweries where you can find house-made kombucha on tap:

Faculty Brewing (Vancouver)

Makers of the popular Oddity Kombucha, Faculty Brewing Co. have their fermented tea on tap and bottled. Vancouver residents can also find Oddity Kombucha around the city and order it through BeerVan. A favourite flavour of mine is the Hibiscus Mint.

Marten BrewinG (Vernon)

Stefan and Pearl Marten not only have kombucha on tap at Marten Brewing Company in Vernon, they own the label they pour: UnderGround Kombucha.  The bubbly lineup includes Hip Hops, a delicious and unqiue blend of rose hips and beer hops. Our own Joe Wiebe says his favourite is the gingery Ninja Ginja. Also available under this brand is a nitro coffee.Vernon locals can also buy cans to go or get a growler fill. If you’re not local to Vernon, the colourful cans and flavours can be found in grocery stores across BC.

Geen Leaf Brewing (North Vancouver)

Located at Lonsdale Quay on Vancouver’s North Shore, Green Leaf Brewing makes their kombucha in-house, with 2-3 flavours rotating at all times. Growler fills are available and Green Leaf also makes a ginger ale. 

Breweries serving locally-made kombuchas include Townsite Brewing in Powell River and Parkside Brewery in Port Moody, and Bridge Brewing offers their house-made kombucha at their Lonsdale BridgeDeck location.

Craft Soda

DDs, this is your Pepsi or Coke elevated several notches.  With creative flavours and healthier takes on favourites like cola and root beer, BC craft breweries have got your back with their craft sodas. If you have kids with you, they’ll probably love the fun names and flavours. I know I wish Callister Soda Co‘s Raspberry Early Grey soda had existed when I was a kid.

Here are breweries making craft sodas:

Callister Brewing (Vancouver)

Vancouver’s Callister Brewing makes small-batch craft sodas under their Callister Soda Co. brand. The flavours are fun and give a unique twist on your traditional soda. These sodas are a popular choice in the Callister tasting room and are available at other breweries around the Lower Mainland. Ginger Mint is next on my list to try.    

Torchlight Brewing (Nelson)

In Nelson, Torchlight Brewing is crafting “happy little sodas” for their West Kootenay city locals to enjoy. Additionally, they have a line of Italian soda syrups so you can feel like you’re enjoying your beverage on a trattoria in Italy. Looking at the menu, may I suggest a cremosa? (Italian soda topped with whipped cream!)

Phillips Brewing & Malting (Victoria)

Phillips Brewing in Victoria has been making craft sodas under their Phillips Soda Works brand for as long as I can remember. Available in their tasting room and at other breweries, their packaging and flavours bring a bit of ’50s diner-era nostalgia to your beverage experience. And you may have also seen their bottles in your local grocery store and not known that the sodas are cousins to the Phillips beers.

Psst! The Phillips Intergalactic Root Beer makes for an excellent ice cream float — check out that recipe here. 

Other breweries making their own sodas include Green Leaf Brewing in North Vancouver and Port Moody’s Fraser Mills Fermentation.

The non-alcoholic beverage offerings for designated drivers at BC craft breweries are not lacking in flavour or fun. If you’re unsure if your local has similar options on tap, pop them a note on social or give them a call. (And remember to get a growler fill or buy a four-pack to enjoy when you get home!)

Two small British Columbia-based airlines offer unique craft beer experience packages that take their passengers on a custom tour by air combined with craft beer tastings and/or brewery visits at the destination.
